Former Riverside County Deputy Convicted of Manslaughter in Love Triangle Shooting

A decade after the fatal shooting of Luis Carlos Marin, former Riverside County Sheriff's deputy Oscar Rodriguez has been found guilty of voluntary manslaughter. An Indio jury delivered the verdict today, concluding a high-profile case rooted in a tumultuous love triangle.

Rodriguez was accused of shooting and killing 39-year-old Marin in 2014. The prosecution argued that Rodriguez, who was romantically involved with Diana Perez—Marin's former girlfriend and the mother of his two children—acted recklessly and without justification. Perez had initially contacted Rodriguez, then a deputy, with complaints about Marin. Prosecutors alleged Rodriguez developed an animosity toward Marin, leading to a personal interest in apprehending him outside of standard law enforcement protocols.

On the night of January 27, 2014, Rodriguez, off-duty and without informing supervisors, went to Marin's mother's home in Coachella, where Marin had just returned from a birthday celebration. A confrontation ensued, during which Marin was fatally shot in the chest. While Rodriguez claimed self-defense, asserting he feared Marin was reaching for a weapon, the prosecution countered that Rodriguez created the dangerous situation.

The jury acquitted Rodriguez of the more severe charge of first-degree murder but found him responsible for Marin's death. He now faces a potential sentence of up to 21 years in state prison. Sentencing is scheduled for August 18 at the Larson Justice Center.

The woman at the center of the dispute, Diana Perez, was initially indicted as an accessory in the case, but her charge was dismissed in April of this year.

This case has also had significant civil repercussions for Riverside County. Marin's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the county, alleging that Rodriguez acted out of personal jealousy and defied his training. In 2016, the county agreed to a substantial $7 million wrongful death settlement with the family, underscoring the controversy and questions surrounding the deputy's actions.

The verdict closes a protracted legal battle that has captivated the Coachella Valley, shedding light on the complexities of justice when a law enforcement officer is involved in a civilian death under such fraught personal circumstances.
