Hollywood Comes to Cathedral City: Young Creators Film Festival Empowers PSUSD Students with Red Carpet Premiere

The glitz and glamour of Hollywood arrived in Cathedral City tonight as the Mary Pickford Theater rolled out the red carpet for local elementary and middle school students, celebrating their cinematic achievements at the second annual Young Creators Student Film Program Festival. The event transformed the local theater into a bona fide movie premiere, complete with flashing cameras and a packed house of eager moviegoers.

Hundreds of young filmmakers from the Palm Springs Unified School District (PSUSD) experienced the thrill of seeing their original short films on the big screen, a testament to their dedication and creativity. The Young Creators Program, the brainchild of acclaimed local film director Christian Sesma and his wife, Lillian, aims to ignite a passion for storytelling through the medium of film.

"I think the unique thing with this program, it's a true and true filmmaking program," Christian Sesma explained. "Filmmaking is a collaborative team effort. So it's 30 students in one class working towards one script, the way we do in Hollywood. So we're teaching them, like we say, we're a Hollywood-certified film school program, and we're showing them the actual way we shoot movies in Hollywood. Same process, just like the 101, like the basics."

Over a rigorous three-week period, 600 students from 4th to 8th grade worked in teams to write, film, and edit 33 unique original short films. The program emphasizes hands-on experience, allowing students to explore various roles within a film crew and develop collaborative skills.

"Our first year they walked in there not knowing what they were doing and we just saw them just light up and really like find a passion," Sesma added, highlighting the transformative impact of the program. He noted the joy of seeing students "come into their own, exploring the filmmaking process, coming out of their shell, expressing themselves, forming friendships with people that didn't even know. It's very powerful."

The excitement was palpable among the young participants. One student expressed, "A lot of us made new friends and we decided to talk about how to start it and we had to take a lot of replays. I feel nervous but also excited about the experience that I got to do and I can't wait to see my face on the screen because I'm one of the actors on the theater and I just can't wait to see how it turned out."

Adding to the Hollywood authenticity, this year's festival featured special guest Louis Tan, a real-life action star known for his roles in Netflix's Cobra Kai, Deadpool 2, and Mortal Kombat. Tan shared valuable advice and inspiration with the aspiring filmmakers.

Christian Sesma, a Coachella Valley native himself, expressed his profound commitment to the program's future. He hopes to continue this impactful initiative for generations to come, providing more students with the invaluable opportunity to explore their creative potential and discover their future selves through the art of filmmaking.
