Palm Springs Animal Shelter Urges Pet Safety Ahead of Fourth of July Fireworks

As Fourth of July celebrations draw near, the Palm Springs Animal Shelter is warning residents to take extra steps to protect their pets from the stress and dangers caused by fireworks.

Dan Rossi, director of the shelter, says they see a spike in lost pets around Independence Day each year. Loud noises from fireworks often cause animals to panic and flee, leading to an increase in stray reports.

“If you’re a pet owner, it’s best to be prepared ahead of time,” said Rossi. “Make sure your home has a quiet, safe space ready a few days before and after the Fourth.”

Tips from the shelter include closing curtains to block out flashes, keeping the lights dim, playing calming music or white noise, and walking your dog early in the day before fireworks begin. But perhaps the best advice? Stay home and stay close.

“An owner being present can really help calm a pet,” Rossi added. “Keep your dog leashed, don’t let them roam freely. It just takes one scare for them to run off.”

Microchipping is another key tool. If a chipped pet ends up at the shelter, staff can quickly scan the chip and contact the owner. For Palm Springs residents, the service is free. For other Coachella Valley cities, it’s just $10.

“It’s about peace of mind,” said Rossi. “Having a microchip means your pet can be reunited with you within minutes.”
