Protesters Shut Down 101 Freeway in L.A.
Tensions are rising in Los Angeles as immigration-related protests stretch into a third straight day. The city is now under tactical alert, and the National Guard has been deployed. Late this afternoon, the demonstrations escalated when protesters flooded the 101 Freeway. Hundreds took over both the northbound and southbound lanes, bringing traffic to a complete stop. Drivers were forced to turn around as law enforcement scrambled to regain control. Protesters also filled nearby overpasses and entrance ramps, creating a massive traffic disruption. This latest move came after law enforcement pushed protesters away from the downtown federal building. Officials estimate about 6,000 people are on the streets of L.A. right now. Of those, around 2,000 are believed to be on or near the 101. The protest is part of a growing wave of outrage over ongoing immigration raids. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as the standoff shows no signs of slowing down. For now, the 101 remains closed and tensions remain high across the city.
