Supreme Court Clears Path For Trump Birthright Citizenship Order

The U.S. Supreme Court is giving the green light to a controversial Trump administration plan, one that aims to end automatic birthright citizenship.

In a 6-3 ruling Friday, the high court sided with the administration’s request to limit the scope of nationwide injunctions. The justices said judges can no longer block policies across the entire country, only for the specific plaintiffs who bring the lawsuit.

This ruling clears the way for the Trump-era plan to move forward. The executive order at the center of the controversy reinterprets the 14th Amendment, saying U.S. citizenship should only be granted to children born here if at least one parent is a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.

The policy had been on hold after lawsuits were filed in several states, including Maryland, Massachusetts, and Washington. But Friday’s ruling does not weigh in on whether the plan is constitutional. It only addresses how far a judge’s ruling can reach.

Conservative justices made up the majority, while the court’s three liberal justices dissented.

That means the policy can now proceed. One notable exception is New Hampshire, where a separate lawsuit has temporarily stopped the policy from taking effect for now.
