Google Buys 200 Megawatts of Fusion Energy from Future Plant in Major Clean Energy Bet
Google announced today that it has signed a deal to purchase 200 megawatts of fusion energy from a facility that has yet to be constructed. The agreement is with Commonwealth Fusion Systems, a Massachusetts-based startup working to make fusion power a commercial reality.
Both companies are calling the deal a major milestone in the pursuit of clean, limitless energy. Fusion power—unlike traditional nuclear energy—produces no carbon emissions and could be a game changer for tech companies like Google that rely heavily on energy-hungry data centers and artificial intelligence systems.
The appeal is clear: a reliable, zero-emissions energy source to support the future of computing. The catch? No machine capable of generating and delivering fusion power at this scale has ever been built.
Construction on the fusion plant is expected to begin early in the next decade, and no firm date has been set for when it will begin producing energy.
Still, the agreement signals Google’s growing commitment to supporting next-generation energy technology, even if it means placing bets years ahead of deployment.
