Palm Springs Animal Shelter Urges Pet Safety Ahead of 4th of July Fireworks

With Fourth of July celebrations just days away, the Palm Springs Animal Shelter is reminding residents to prepare their pets for the noise and stress caused by fireworks.

Executive Director Dan Rossi says the shelter sees the largest number of stray animals during this holiday each year, as fireworks often cause pets to panic and run away.

“If you’re a pet owner, it’s best to be prepared ahead of time,” Rossi said. “Make sure your home has a quiet, safe space ready a few days before and after the Fourth.”

The shelter’s tips for keeping pets safe include:

• Closing curtains to block flashing lights

• Keeping the house dimly lit

• Playing white noise or soft music

• Walking dogs early in the day before fireworks begin

But above all, Rossi says the most effective approach is simply staying home. “An owner being present can really help calm a pet,” he said. “Keep your dog leashed and close — it only takes one scare for them to run off.”

Another key safety step: microchipping. If a chipped pet is brought to the shelter, staff can quickly scan the chip and contact the owner. In Palm Springs, microchipping is free. For residents in other Coachella Valley cities, the cost is just $10.

“It’s about peace of mind,” Rossi said. “Having a microchip means your pet can be reunited with you within minutes.”
