American Red Cross Launches Summer Blood Drive with Free Sunglasses Giveaway

As summer vacations begin, the American Red Cross is once again urging people to donate blood to prevent a seasonal shortage. Fewer blood drives and a drop in donor turnout during summer months often leave hospitals in short supply — and that can have serious consequences.

“Even though everybody else is taking a vacation during the summer, the need for blood doesn’t stop and doesn’t take a vacation,” said Dr. Courtney Lawrence, Divisional Chief Medical Officer for the American Red Cross.

The organization typically sees its lowest blood supply in late summer and early fall. While all blood types are needed, type O remains in especially high demand.

“It used to be thought that type O negative was the only blood type that could be given in an emergency,” Dr. Lawrence said, “but even O positive can be safely given to about 80% of patients.”

To encourage donations, the Red Cross has partnered with sunglasses brand Goodr to offer a limited-time incentive. From July 1 through July 14, donors who give blood will receive an exclusive pair of Goodr sunglasses — complete with stickers to personalize them with their blood type.

“Less than 3% of the U.S. population donates blood each year,” said Dr. Lawrence. “If you want to show off and be part of that proud percent, you can with these sunglasses.”
