The GENIUS Act (Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for U.S. Stablecoins) is a landmark piece of U.S. legislation that creates the first federal regulatory framework for stablecoins. Passed by the Senate in June 2025, the act requires stablecoins to be fully backed 1:1 by liquid assets like U.S. dollars or Treasuries, mandates monthly reserve disclosures, annual audits, and compliance with anti-money laundering (AML) laws. It also prioritizes consumer protections, including ensuring holders have first claims in the event of issuer bankruptcy. The act aims to support innovation in the crypto space while establishing clear national standards for digital dollar alternatives.
