“To really be solution-oriented, our leaders need to connect and work with one another,” Hyland explains. “That collaboration is key.”

Leadership Coachella Valley is a program designed to identify, motivate, and develop future leaders across the region. For over 25 years, it has nurtured professionals from every field—students, city council members, nonprofit directors, business leaders, and even media professionals—who are passionate about shaping a better Valley. The program’s mission is not just to inform participants about local issues, but to give them the network, tools, and confidence to make change.

Hyland emphasizes the importance of mental and emotional health in leadership.

“Everything starts from the top,” she says. “When you’re in a room with 40 other driven individuals, you realize you’re not alone. You learn to delegate, to collaborate, and most importantly, to ask for help. It’s not just about being capable—it’s about being connected.”

Erin also notes the importance of diverse and visible leadership, especially among women and young people. As a city commissioner, she’s often the youngest and only woman at the table.

“We need more women in these spaces,” she says. “And if you're passionate about something, that’s your cue—you can be a leader in that space.”

So, what defines a leader? According to Hyland, it's not about titles—it's about heart and passion.

“If your heart is in the right place, and you care deeply about something, you can lead. Whether you're new to the Valley or have lived here your whole life, there’s room for you to grow and give back.”
