What to Know about the New Covid-19 Variant
As Americans gear up for July 4th celebrations, health experts are urging caution amid the emergence of new COVID-19 variants that could trigger a summer wave of infections. Although COVID-19 has largely faded from daily headlines, the virus continues to evolve. The World Health Organization (WHO) is currently monitoring six variants due to their increasing prevalence and potential public health impact. Among them is NB.1.8.1—informally nicknamed “Nimbus” by researchers and citizen scientists who previously named variants like Kraken and Eris.
Another variant catching the attention of virus trackers, though not yet designated for official monitoring by the WHO, is XFG, known informally as “Stratus.” Both variants have shown signs of spreading, prompting renewed concerns just as millions of Americans prepare for gatherings, travel, and other Independence Day festivities.
Health experts emphasize that while most current symptoms resemble those of a mild cold—such as congestion, fatigue, and sore throat—these new variants could still lead to increased infections, especially in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces.
In today’s Health Minute, Mandy Gaither reports on what to watch for and how to stay safe as the virus continues to evolve this summer season.
