Explosions Rock Yolo County Fireworks Warehouse, Ignite Wildfires and Prompt Evacuations
A colossal explosion at a fireworks warehouse in Northern California's Yolo County on Tuesday evening has unleashed a torrent of destruction, sparking a significant wildfire and initiating a frantic search for seven unaccounted individuals. The incident, which occurred just before 6 p.m. near County Road 23 and County Road 86A in Esparto, has sent shockwaves through the quiet agricultural community.
According to Chief Curtis Lawrence of the Esparto Fire Protection District, responding units arrived on scene to a chaotic environment. "Units responded, arrived on scene to find a few commercial buildings well involved, as well as numerous explosions and numerous spot fires throughout the area," Chief Lawrence stated. Videos captured by bewildered residents show massive explosions igniting fireworks that shot erratically into the night sky. Eyewitnesses reported feeling their "whole floor moving" and windows "going back and forth" from the sheer force of the blasts, with some initially mistaking the commotion for a plane crash or an earthquake.
The explosions rapidly escalated, igniting approximately 80 acres of surrounding vegetation. While fire crews have successfully contained the forward progress of these spot fires, a safe perimeter is being maintained around the devastated warehouse. The Yolo County Sheriff's Office immediately issued a one-mile mandatory evacuation order around the affected area, urging the public to avoid the vicinity for several days to ensure the safety of emergency personnel.
The severity of the incident has drawn state-level attention. Governor Gavin Newsom's office confirmed that the State Fire Marshal has dispatched an arson and bomb investigation team to the site. Deputy State Fire Marshal Kara Garrett highlighted the rarity of such an event, noting that facilities like this are subject to "stringent California pyrotechnic requirements" and federal explosive storage regulations. The cause of the explosions remains under active investigation.
Adding to the gravity of the situation, officials confirmed Wednesday morning that seven people are currently unaccounted for following the blast. First responders are working closely with the property owner and utilizing unmanned aircraft systems to conduct a thorough assessment of the scene and locate the missing individuals. The disaster has also cast a shadow over impending Fourth of July celebrations, as fireworks intended for displays in Yuba City, Marysville, Sutter County, and Yuba County were reportedly destroyed in the fire, forcing these communities to reconsider their holiday plans.
