House Races Toward Vote on Trump’s Budget Bill Before July 4
The House of Representatives is moving quickly to vote on President Donald Trump’s new budget bill after it passed the Senate by a narrow margin. A procedural vote could happen as early as tonight, with House Speaker Mike Johnson aiming for a final vote by tomorrow—just in time for the president to sign it by Independence Day.
The sweeping legislation includes a number of Republican-backed tax measures, such as extending the 2017 tax cuts, expanding the child tax credit, raising some standard deductions, and temporarily easing taxes on tips and overtime. Supporters say these changes will provide relief to working families and incentivize productivity.
But not everyone is on board. Fiscal conservatives within the Republican Party are raising red flags over the bill’s potential long-term impact, warning that it could add trillions to the national deficit.
With a slim majority, Republicans can only afford to lose three votes in the House if they hope to pass the measure without Democratic support.
