AAA Forecasts 61 Million Travelers for Fourth of July Weekend as Gas Prices Drop

The Fourth of July holiday is here, and Americans are traveling, grilling, and preparing for fireworks—while also keeping an eye on their wallets.

According to AAA, an estimated 61 million people are expected to travel by car this holiday weekend. That’s the highest number in years, with most travelers choosing to drive due to lower costs and added flexibility.

“Most of those people are going to be driving to their destinations,” said AAA spokesperson Aixa Diaz. “It’s easier, it’s cheaper, and it affords more flexibility.”

This year, gas prices are at their lowest for July 4th since the start of the pandemic, with the national average around $3.17 per gallon—about 30 cents less than last year.

Air travel is also seeing record numbers, with AAA projecting over 5.8 million flyers during the holiday period. But higher demand is pushing prices up, with roundtrip domestic airfare averaging 4 percent higher than last year.

Backyard barbecues are also part of the holiday picture. According to Wells Fargo, the cost of feeding ten people a traditional July 4th meal is about $130, up 2.2 percent from 2024. The main contributors to the price bump: beef and eggs.

For those watching their grocery bills, chicken remains the most budget-friendly option, up just 1 percent year-over-year.
