Fourth of July Travel Surge Hits Southern California with Over 5 Million Expected to Travel
Fourth of July weekend remains one of the busiest travel times in the country, and this year is no exception. In Southern California alone, over 5 million travelers are expected to take to the roads or skies.
Here in the Coachella Valley, Palm Springs International Airport is experiencing its off-season—meaning fewer flights and shorter lines. For travelers flying out, this makes PSP an appealing option.
AAA says the holiday travel period began last Saturday and will continue through at least July 6. Nationwide, over 72 million Americans are expected to travel domestically.
In interviews with NBC Palm Springs, travelers were still making last-minute trips on the eve of Independence Day. “We’re actually going to 29 Palms to visit my sailor back home,” said one traveler from Missouri. Others were flying in from North Carolina and beyond.
AAA estimates 4.3 million Americans are hitting the road this year, a record-breaking number. Experts urge drivers to prep their vehicles in advance.
“Even today and tomorrow, it’s going to be busy,” one expert said. “Make sure your car maintenance is up to date—check your tires and battery before hitting the road.”
For those flying, AAA recommends arriving at the airport three hours early for international flights and two hours early for domestic departures.
Palm Springs International Airport expects about 8,500 departing passengers from Thursday through Sunday. Fewer crowds mean quicker check-ins and a smoother airport experience for summer travelers.

UPDATE: The San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department have confirmed that one person has died and another two were injured after a home explosion on Ocotillo Rd in Twentynine Palms. Security camera video from a nearby neighbor captured the dramatic blast around 8:28 p.m., followed by a fire that brought a massive emergency response from fire and law enforcement agencies across the Morongo Basin. The burning structure has been confirmed as a residence at 6427 Ocotillo Ave. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation and the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Arson/Bomb Detail team is conducting the investigation.
