Major Illegal Fireworks Bust Leads to Three Arrests in Coachella
The Indio Police Department executed a significant illegal fireworks operation Wednesday night, resulting in three arrests and the seizure of dangerous explosives and firearms. Detectives from the Indio Police Department's Street Crimes Unit and Major Crimes Unit served two search warrants at separate locations in the Coachella Valley around 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 2nd. The investigation revealed that a market in the 1500 block of Second Street in Coachella was selling illegal fireworks to minors.
The operation resulted in the seizure of a substantial amount of illegal fireworks, along with a handgun and an AK-47 rifle. Two men were arrested at the market location, while a third man was arrested at the second location. All three were booked at the John Benoit Detention Center on multiple accused violations. The firearms recovered were not legally registered and have been taken off the streets, according to police.
"We're committed to helping everyone enjoy the holiday safely," said Indio Police Chief Brian Tully. "By conducting proactive enforcement like last night's operation, we're working to prevent injuries, fires, and crime—so our community can celebrate responsibly."
The Indio Police Department reminds the public that illegal fireworks, including cherry bombs, mortars, aerial shells, firecrackers, bottle rockets, and Roman candles, are strictly prohibited. Violators face fines of up to $2,000 for a first offense and up to $5,000 for subsequent violations.
Anyone with information regarding illegal fireworks is encouraged to call the Indio Police Department's dedicated fireworks hotline at (442) 300-3104 or submit a tip anonymously through Valley Crime Stoppers at (760) 341-STOP.
