For generations, the Fourth of July has symbolized freedom — a day when the nation comes together to celebrate independence, history, and what it means to be American. But in 2025, not everyone feels like celebrating. For many, the holiday now sparks difficult emotions and tough questions about identity, belonging, and justice.

NBC Palm Springs asked locals a simple but powerful question: What does the Fourth of July mean to you? The answers were deeply personal — and often surprising.

“It means to me that I'm still not free in this country,” one person admitted, their voice heavy with emotion.

Others shared feelings of frustration and sorrow about the state of the nation.

“I just feel there's so much turmoil,” said another. “I see good people being taken, people who came here to build a better life. What’s happening with immigration in this country... it’s painful. It doesn’t make me feel American.”

Immigration — a cornerstone of America's identity — has become a flashpoint for grief and alienation. For some immigrants and their families, the Fourth no longer represents hope, but instead reminds them of exclusion and fear.

“I came here as an immigrant,” one individual said. “This was supposed to be a land of opportunity. Now? It just feels like we're not wanted.”

The word “patriot” once evoked pride, unity, and shared values. But for some, it now feels hollow or even alienating.

“When you hear that word now — patriot — please, no. Just… no,” one responder said.

“I’m not sure patriotism means the same thing it used to,” said another. “This is America now. And it’s not great.”

Yet even in the pain, many still hold onto hope. For every voice expressing heartache, there was another calling for unity, compassion, and change.

“We’re all in this together,” someone reflected. “The whole world is. We have to stay positive, look to the future. A little kindness goes a long way.”

“We have to hold it in our hearts that we can make things better,” another said.

This year's Fourth of July may not be wrapped in red, white, and blue for everyone. But perhaps that's what makes it more important than ever — to listen, to reflect, and to ask what freedom, equality, and patriotism should mean.
