Joey Chestnut Returns for Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest After Year-Long Ban
Before we go, it just wouldn’t be the Fourth of July without one of America’s wildest traditions—the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest.
Held every Independence Day on the Coney Island boardwalk, the competition returns this year with a familiar face back in the spotlight: Joey Chestnut.
Chestnut, 41, is seeking his 17th mustard belt after being banned from the contest last year due to a sponsorship dispute involving a plant-based hot dog company. That controversy kept the reigning champ off the stage, but he’s back and ready to defend his legacy.
He still holds the world record for hot dog eating: 76 hot dogs in just 10 minutes. That includes buns—and reportedly numbers 20 and 21 are where things start to get real.
While the spectacle draws millions of viewers every year, it’s not for everyone. Many admit it’s tough to watch the close-ups, but agree it’s a Fourth of July staple.
Whether you're a fan of the competition or just tuning in out of tradition, all eyes will be on Chestnut to see if he can once again claim the title.
