Wolf Fire in Banning Grows to 1,400 Acres, Just 10% Contained

Hundreds of firefighters are battling the fast-moving Wolf Fire this morning in Banning, which has now scorched more than 1,400 acres and is only 10% contained.

The blaze broke out just after 3 p.m. Sunday near Old Banning-Idyllwild Road and Wolfskill Truck Trail. Since then, it has spread rapidly, fueled by dry brush and gusty winds.

Evacuation orders have been issued for areas east of Highland Springs Avenue and west of Old Cabazon Road. Over 258 personnel are currently assigned to the fire, with additional crews requested. Resources on the scene include helicopters, bulldozers, and water tenders, all working to prevent the fire from reaching nearby residential neighborhoods.

Bright red fire retardant can be seen lining hillsides as crews work to slow the fire’s advance. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Meanwhile, a separate fire—the Mindy Fire—is burning west of the area in Riverside County and is about 70% contained. Hemet High School has been opened for evacuations related to that blaze.

Air quality remains a serious concern across the Coachella Valley. The South Coast Air Quality Management District has issued a smoke advisory, with smoke drifting east toward valley communities. Cal Fire officials say the smoke is expected to settle across the region. Residents, especially those with asthma or respiratory conditions, are urged to stay indoors, keep windows closed, and avoid outdoor activities.
