Coachella Valley Fire Officials Warn Hikers of Summer Dangers
As temperatures soar across the Coachella Valley, local first responders are issuing a warning to hikers: be prepared, stay safe, and know the risks.
Despite the summer heat, many locals are hitting the trails for both fitness and peace of mind. But fire officials say that scenic escapes can quickly turn dangerous, especially with steep grades, jagged rocks, and the threat of rattlesnakes.
Battalion Chief Matthew Coates says injuries and rescues on the trails are common this time of year and take up valuable emergency resources. He urges hikers to stay on marked trails and inform a friend or family member of their plans.
"You really have to watch your footing," said Coates. "Make sure you have 32 ounces of water with you. Be aware of rattlesnakes in the area, and avoid unmarked paths."
Even experienced hikers can get into trouble quickly, especially when dealing with extreme heat. With triple-digit temperatures expected for months, safety remains a top concern for fire officials.
For many, hiking is about escaping stress and reconnecting with nature. But those who venture out are reminded that preparation is key to avoiding preventable emergencies.
