Palm Desert to Consider High-Tech Traffic Enforcement System at Public Safety Meeting
A new automated enforcement system for parking violations could go into effect in the city of Palm Desert. On Tuesday, July 8th the Public Safety Committee will hold it’s regularly scheduled meeting at Palm Desert City Hall starting at 3:30 p.m. Of note on the agenda is the “Safety Stick Pilot Program.”
The Safety Stick Technology Explained
The "Safety Stick Pilot Program," is described on the agenda as a “solar-powered, radar-based enforcement platform.” Unlike traditional parking enforcement that relies on human officers patrolling streets, this system uses radar technology combined with cellular connectivity to monitor parking compliance in real-time.
The Safety Stick operates through what's called SentryLink technology, which enables remote enforcement and immediate citation issuance. It will constantly monitor high-risk areas where illegal parking creates safety hazards or blocks emergency access.
Where and Why It Would Be Deployed
The proposed system targets specific areas where parking violations create genuine safety concerns. These critical zones include crosswalks where illegally parked vehicles can obstruct pedestrian visibility, fire lanes that must remain clear for emergency vehicle access, school zones where children's safety is paramount, bus stops that need to remain accessible for public transportation, and loading areas essential for business operations.
The Vendor
The vendor, MPS, has been developing this technology since 2012 and currently manages more than 250,000 parking spaces across 50 cities nationwide. Their track record includes overseeing tens of millions of parking sessions annually.
What Happens Next in the Process
If the Public Safety Committee recommends moving forward after Tuesday's meeting, city staff will coordinate a study session with the full City Council. This study session would provide a more comprehensive review that includes policy considerations, legal requirements for automated enforcement, community impact assessments, outreach strategies, and detailed financial projections.
Attending Tuesday's Meeting
The Public Safety Committee meeting begins at 3:30 PM on Tuesday, July 8th, at Palm Desert City Hall located at 73-510 Fred Waring Drive. Residents interested in learning more about the Safety Stick proposal or providing input should plan to attend this meeting, as it represents the primary opportunity for public engagement before the proposal advances to City Council consideration.
