President Trump Tours ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ Migrant Detention Site in Florida Everglades
President Donald Trump visited a new migrant detention site deep in the Florida Everglades on Tuesday, a location that’s quickly earned the nickname “Alligator Alcatraz.” The site, once a remote training airfield west of Miami, has been rapidly converted into a large-scale detention, processing, and deportation center for undocumented migrants.
The president was joined on the tour by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. The facility — isolated and surrounded by swamp terrain — is being billed as a highly secure location for holding migrants prior to deportation proceedings.
Governor DeSantis said the project came together in just over a week, with the rapid construction of a temporary tent city designed to house up to 5,000 migrants.
The facility is expected to become a central hub for immigration enforcement efforts in the region. Critics have already raised concerns about the remoteness of the site and access to legal services for detainees.
