Trump Sends Tariff Warning Letters to Japan and South Korea, Extends Deadline to August 1

President Donald Trump has intensified pressure on two of America's top trading partners—Japan and South Korea—by notifying them of new tariffs set to begin August 1.

On Monday, Trump posted on Truth Social revealing that both countries had received formal letters outlining a 25% tariff rate on their exports to the U.S. The move is part of the administration’s broader effort to address trade deficits and foreign policies that Trump believes restrict the sale of American goods abroad.

In the letters, Trump expressed frustration with ongoing trade imbalances and urged both countries to consider manufacturing more goods within the United States to avoid the tariffs. The letters also warned that retaliatory tariffs would be met with even higher penalties from the U.S.

While the new tariffs were originally scheduled to take effect this Wednesday, the White House announced Monday that President Trump will sign an executive order delaying implementation of all “reciprocal” tariffs until August 1. Officials say the delay gives countries additional time to reach trade deals.

The tariff campaign doesn’t stop with Japan and South Korea. Trump has also sent similar notices to countries including Malaysia, South Africa, and Myanmar, some of which could see tariff rates climb as high as 40%.

These tariff increases are part of Trump’s broader trade policy efforts, which include reworking longstanding agreements and encouraging global manufacturers to relocate operations to the U.S. as a way to rebalance economic ties.

The situation remains fluid, with the White House promising more announcements in the days to come.
