Talking with Thalia: More Than Just Back Pain Relief

When most people think of chiropractors, they think of back pain. But chiropractic care offers far more than just spinal relief. In fact, it may help alleviate a wide range of conditions from vertigo to migraines to digestive issues.

On this edition of Talking with Thalia, Dr. Andrew Lind, chiropractor at McDonald Wellness Center in Palm Desert, shed light on the full spectrum of benefits from chiropractic adjustments.

“We evaluate the spine, find areas that are dysfunctional, and work to restore proper function,” Dr. Lind explained.

He recommends that everyone—pain or no pain—see a chiropractor about once a month to maintain spinal health. “Even if you're pain-free, a monthly adjustment can help keep things aligned and functioning optimally,” he said.

While back pain is the most common reason patients seek chiropractic care, Dr. Lind often sees people with extremity pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, dizziness, and even persistent headaches. One surprising case involved a patient suffering from vertigo and ear issues—conditions not typically associated with the spine.

“There’s no direct spinal nerve causing vertigo,” Dr. Lind said. “But misalignment in the upper neck can impact surrounding areas, and when we addressed those, the vertigo improved significantly.”

Dr. Lind also noted improvements in patients dealing with conditions like acid reflux and ulcers—again, not directly caused by spinal issues, but influenced by overall nerve function and alignment.

And for those concerned about the traditional “crack” associated with adjustments? There’s a gentle alternative.

“Not everyone is suited for manual manipulation,” Dr. Lind noted. “We use a method called the Activator Technique, a handheld device that safely and gently moves the joint. It’s effective and suitable for everyone—from infants to the elderly.”

The Activator Technique is becoming increasingly popular among chiropractors for its precision and non-invasive approach. Many patients don’t even feel the adjustment, but benefit from improved function and reduced symptoms.

Dr. Lind emphasized that chiropractic care plays a valuable role in preventive health, not just symptom relief. Regular visits can help the body function better overall, reduce stress on the nervous system, and promote holistic wellness.
