TSA to End Shoe Removal Requirement at Airport Security Checkpoints

TSA to End Shoe Removal Requirement at Airport Security Checkpoints

A major shift in airport security is on the horizon. The Transportation Security Administration is preparing to phase out the requirement for travelers to remove their shoes during security screening, according to a source familiar with the matter.

The policy, which has been in place since 2006, was implemented in response to a 2001 attempted bombing by Richard Reid, later dubbed the “Shoe Bomber.” Reid attempted to ignite explosives hidden in his shoes during a transatlantic flight from Paris to Miami, leading to widespread changes in airport screening procedures.

While TSA has not officially confirmed or announced the policy change, internal sources say the update is coming soon. Currently, only TSA PreCheck members are typically allowed to keep their shoes on during screening, thanks to their expedited screening privileges.

This move would mark one of the biggest shifts in airport screening practices in nearly two decades, potentially reducing wait times and improving the passenger experience.

Until the change is officially announced and implemented, travelers should continue to follow current security guidelines, including removing shoes unless enrolled in TSA PreCheck.
