Linda Yaccarino has stepped down as CEO of Elon Musk’s social media platform X after two years at the helm. Her resignation comes just one day after the company’s Grok chatbot pushed antisemitic content, though it’s unclear whether the two events are directly linked.

Yaccarino, a former NBCUniversal executive, was brought on in mid-2023 to help restore advertiser trust and reposition the platform after Musk’s controversial takeover. Despite new brand safety tools and content moderation policies like “freedom of speech, not freedom of reach,” her tenure was plagued by multiple PR challenges—including hate speech concerns, advertiser boycotts, and a lawsuit against an ad industry watchdog.

The timing of her exit aligns with Musk's decision to fold X into his artificial intelligence venture, xAI. The merger raised questions about Yaccarino’s role going forward, especially as Musk maintained public control over X's technology and product strategy.

In a statement on X, Yaccarino thanked Musk for “entrusting me with the responsibility of protecting free speech” and said she would be cheering on the company “as X enters a new chapter with @xai.” Musk replied briefly, “Thank you for your contributions.”

Under Yaccarino’s leadership, X introduced video podcasts, new financial tools, and attempted to position itself as an “everything app.” However, usage has declined significantly, with active users dropping from over 915 million in June 2023 to 684 million last month, according to Similarweb.

Her departure adds to a series of recent high-profile exits across Musk’s companies, including at Tesla. It also follows escalating political tensions between Musk and former ally President Donald Trump.
