New U.S.-Only TikTok App Could Launch by September Amid Ongoing ByteDance Dispute

A new version of TikTok designed specifically for U.S. users could debut as early as September, according to reports—part of a continued effort to satisfy legal and national security concerns surrounding the app’s Chinese ownership.

President Donald Trump has delayed enforcement of a law that requires TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to sell the popular social media platform or face a ban in the United States. Trump recently said a buyer has been identified, though no official details have been released.

Meanwhile, TikTok is reportedly working behind the scenes on a separate American version of the app, one that would feature a completely different algorithm from the version used globally.

That change may be necessary because the Chinese government has said it would block any transfer of TikTok's existing algorithm to a foreign entity. In effect, any new U.S. TikTok would have to be built from the ground up.

The move raises new questions about what a re-engineered TikTok would look like—and whether it can maintain the same level of user experience and engagement without the technology that powered its global success.

The situation remains fluid, with legal, political, and business negotiations continuing behind the scenes.
