New U.S.-Only TikTok App Set to Launch September 5 After ByteDance Sale
A new TikTok app is preparing to launch in the United States, marking a major shift in how the platform will operate stateside. According to Newsbreak and The Verge, the new version of the app, reportedly codenamed “M2,” is scheduled for release on September 5 — and it will not be tied to ByteDance, the Chinese company that currently owns TikTok.
This development comes as ByteDance is expected to finalize a sale of its U.S. operations amid ongoing pressure from lawmakers to sever Chinese ties due to national security concerns. Once the deal closes, the current TikTok platform will effectively be replaced in the U.S. by the new app, which will be operated by the American buyer.
The new app is not a simple rebranding — sources say it's being built separately by TikTok’s U.S. staff and is designed to function independently from ByteDance's original version. This move aims to fully comply with legal requirements for divestment and eliminate concerns over Chinese influence on American user data.
While exact features of the M2 app remain under wraps, it is expected to retain many of the familiar elements that made TikTok popular, offering a seamless transition for American users under new ownership.
