Coachella Eyes Passenger Rail Stop Linking Valley to Los Angeles

The City of Coachella is moving forward with its vision for the future by exploring plans for a passenger rail stop as part of the long-anticipated Coachella Valley Rail project.

In the works since 1991, the Coachella Valley Rail line would link the desert community to downtown Los Angeles. According to the Riverside County Transportation Commission, the project is now in its planning phase to narrow down potential station locations across several valley cities, including Coachella.

Officials say the rail line could be about eight years away from actual construction. Riverside County Transportation Commission Executive Director Anne Knutson emphasized that the goal is to create a reliable alternative to the heavily trafficked I-10 Freeway while boosting local economic development.

“We’re talking about connecting the economy, bringing more people to the Coachella Valley, and highlighting all the great things happening here,” Knutson said.

For local residents, like one Coachella man who regularly commutes to Los Angeles to visit family, the idea is about more than business. “The traffic can be really bad. Sometimes it takes us two hours, sometimes more. A train would be so much easier,” he said.

Coachella’s Director of Public Works and City Engineer Andrew Simmons says the city is conducting its own study using a $2 million grant, aiming to involve the community every step of the way. Public workshop events are held every few months to gather input on how the rail station could fit into future commercial development and job growth in Coachella.

One of those workshops, originally scheduled for this week, has been rescheduled for July 24 at the Coachella Library. City leaders encourage residents to attend and help shape the project’s direction.

As for funding, that remains the largest challenge ahead. The Riverside County Transportation Commission is actively working with city officials and state partners to secure the necessary backing.
