Dr. Marcus Funchess Begins Leadership at Palm Springs Unified with Vision for Excellence
A new era is underway at Palm Springs Unified School District with the arrival of new superintendent Dr. Marcus Funchess. NBC Palm Springs contributor Marian Bouchot sat down with Dr. Funchess to explore his journey, values, and his bold vision for the district’s future.
Dr. Funchess didn’t set out to be an educator—he originally planned to work in probation. But substitute teaching opened his eyes to a deeper calling.
“I realized I could reach young people before they entered the system,” Funchess explained. That realization launched a 30-year career in education, which included roles as a teacher, principal, HR director, and assistant superintendent at San Bernardino City Unified.
“My purpose is to positively impact the lives of others, and that starts with care,” he said. “I chose Palm Springs because of how deeply this community values its diversity.” Funchess’s mission at PSUSD is rooted in two core goals: building student confidence and raising academic achievement. “We want to elevate academic excellence for all our scholars,” he said. “That starts with strong leadership at every level.”
Madonna Gerrell, the district’s board clerk, said Funchess emerged as the top choice in a nationwide search that included over 30 applicants.
“We weren’t just looking for a superintendent—we were looking for a match,” Gerrell said. “Someone who could grow with us and lead with heart. Dr. Funchess is that leader.”
Off the clock, Funchess is a family man and a loyal Los Angeles Angels fan. But as the first day of school on August 6 approaches, he says he’s ready to roll up his sleeves.
“I’m excited to meet our families, connect with our community, and help students achieve their goals and dreams,” he said.
