Elderly Woman Scammed Out of $16,000 by Fake Microsoft IT Support, Pennsylvania Police Say

Pennsylvania State Police are investigating a financial scam that cost an elderly woman $16,000 after two suspects pretended to be Microsoft IT support representatives.

According to state police, the incident happened on May 28 in Adams County, Pennsylvania. The suspects convinced the victim to transfer money by depositing funds through a Bitcoin kiosk and purchasing Walmart gift cards.

Police say one of the suspects was caught on surveillance footage redeeming one of those gift cards at the Sam’s Club on Airport Center Drive in Allentown, located in Lehigh County. Authorities have released an image from that footage and are asking the public for help identifying the person.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Pennsylvania State Police in the following ways:

  • Call PSP Gettysburg station at 717-334-8111

  • Call the PSP tip line at 1-800-472-8477

  • Submit a tip online through the official PSP website

Police remind the public that legitimate companies like Microsoft will never request payment through Bitcoin kiosks or retail gift cards.
