Palm Desert Plans Major Park Upgrades, Faces Delay on Accessibility Project

At tonight’s Palm Desert City Council meeting, leaders are expected to greenlight a major investment in local parks—just as one long-awaited project hits a setback.

The city is poised to approve nearly $1 million in funding to purchase new playground equipment and shade structures for Civic Center Park. The upgrades aim to provide much-needed relief and recreational value for families, especially during the triple-digit summer heat.

However, not everything is moving forward smoothly. The city is rejecting all contractor bids for federally required accessibility improvements at Cahuilla Hills Park. Officials cited unspecified issues with the submissions and announced they will restart the bidding process entirely.

The decision means the accessibility upgrades—intended to bring the park in line with federal ADA standards—are now several months behind schedule.

Both items are listed on tonight’s consent calendar, meaning they’re expected to pass without public discussion.
