Tensions Rise as Federal Immigration Raids Spark Protests Across Southern California

Tensions are growing in Southern California following a series of high-profile immigration raids, drawing protests, legal challenges, and strong reactions from local officials.

Federal agents carried out large-scale operations this week at marijuana farms in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. Protesters clashed with immigration officers in Camarillo, where military-style vehicles and helicopters were seen overhead as agents used smoke canisters to disperse crowds.

The Ventura County Fire Department responded to reports of breathing problems from the gas deployment, while Customs and Border Protection said someone fired a pistol at officers—prompting a $50,000 reward offer for information in that case.

At a similar raid in Carpinteria, Congressman Salud Carbajal criticized the federal response, calling it “overkill.” Carbajal said ICE agents were heavily armed, using flash and smoke devices that injured at least one child. Officials also reported that 10 juveniles were found working at one facility, prompting a child labor investigation.

Earlier in the week, more than 90 federal agents and California National Guard troops descended on MacArthur Park in Los Angeles, a neighborhood with a large immigrant population. Though the park was mostly empty, the presence of armed vehicles and soldiers triggered protests and condemnation from Mayor Karen Bass, who signed an executive order aimed at protecting immigrant communities.

“It is outrageous and un-American that we have federal armed vehicles in our parks when nothing is going on in the parks,” Bass said.

Meanwhile, a federal judge is expected to rule on a lawsuit filed by the ACLU of Southern California challenging the raids. The suit alleges unconstitutional mass arrests and detentions aimed at meeting quotas set by the Trump administration.

US District Judge Maame Ewusi-Mensah Frimpong, hearing arguments Thursday, questioned government attorneys on whether agents were using actionable intelligence or simply targeting immigrant-heavy areas.

NBC Palm Springs will continue following this developing story.
