Two Dead, Three Injured in I-10 Big Rig Crash Near Cathedral City; CHP Continues Investigation
Authorities have now identified the two men who lost their lives in Thursday morning’s multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 near Cathedral City. The California Highway Patrol confirms that 49-year-old Miguel Macias from Santa Ana and 58-year-old Francisco Sicairos Leon of Desert Hot Springs were killed when a big rig lost control in the westbound lanes and veered across the center divider, crashing into eastbound traffic.
The collision occurred just after 7 a.m. near the Bob Hope Drive exit. Alarming dash camera footage from nearby vehicles captured the aftermath as the semi-truck barreled through guardrails and overturned, striking multiple cars. In addition to the two fatalities, three other individuals sustained injuries. CHP Officer David Torres stated that next step for the leading agency in the investigation is to inspect the big rig involved. Meanwhile, officials are reminding drivers to stay alert, maintain safe distances from large trucks, and ensure their own vehicles are in good working order before heading out on the highway. "Even if a tire comes off these big rigs, it can cause major damage or injury to you. So there are large vehicles, and when you're driving down the freeway, you're sharing this highway with them, so just be very cognizant of where you are in relation to those big rigs, and always keep your safety in mind." Torres emphasized. Anyone with information related to the crash is urged to contact the CHP Indio office.
