Trump Threatens to Revoke Rosie O’Donnell’s Citizenship Amid Long-Running Feud
President Donald Trump reignited his public feud with comedian and former talk show host Rosie O’Donnell on Saturday, writing on Truth Social that he is considering revoking her U.S. citizenship.
“Because of the fact that Rosie O’Donnell is not in the best interests of our Great Country, I am giving serious consideration to taking away her Citizenship,” Trump posted. He added that she “should remain in the wonderful Country of Ireland, if they want her.”
Legal experts were quick to push back. CNN Supreme Court analyst and Georgetown Law professor Steve Vladeck described Trump’s statement as “patently unconstitutional.” Vladeck noted that U.S. law allows revocation of citizenship in only limited cases, and those actions require judicial review.
CNN has not received a formal response from the White House regarding the statement. However, the post comes days after O’Donnell criticized Trump on TikTok, blaming his administration for gutting early warning systems and slowing the federal response to the deadly Texas Hill Country floods.
O’Donnell, who moved to Ireland shortly before Trump’s 2025 inauguration, told CNN earlier this year her move was tied to concerns about his administration’s policies. “I knew after reading Project 2025 that if Trump got in, it was time for me and my nonbinary child to leave the country,” O’Donnell said.
In response to Trump’s latest comments, O’Donnell posted on Instagram: “you want to revoke my citizenship? go ahead and try, king joffrey with a tangerine spray tan. i’m not yours to silence. i never was.”
Trump and O’Donnell’s public feud stretches back nearly two decades, beginning in 2006 when O’Donnell called Trump a “snake-oil salesman” during an episode of The View. Trump, in turn, has frequently used harsh language against O’Donnell, calling her “a real loser” and “crude, rude, obnoxious, and dumb.”
While Trump’s threat has no legal standing according to experts, it marks another flashpoint in one of American pop culture’s longest-running celebrity-political rivalries.
