Obama Urges Democrats to ‘Toughen Up’ and Fight for Their Values
Former President Barack Obama is urging Democrats to “toughen up” and step up their efforts ahead of critical elections, making a rare public call to action at a private fundraiser in New Jersey.
Speaking at an event hosted by New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and his wife, Tammy Murphy, Obama told donors that now is not the time for inaction or frustration but for standing firm on values like free speech and pragmatic governance.
“I think it’s going to require a little bit less navel-gazing and a little less whining and being in fetal positions,” Obama said, according to remarks obtained by CNN. “Don’t tell me you’re a Democrat, but you’re kind of disappointed right now, so you’re not doing anything. No, now is exactly the time that you get in there and do something.”
Obama emphasized the importance of supporting gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia, describing candidates Mikie Sherrill and Abigail Spanberger as strong voices for pragmatic leadership.
The private dinner raised $2.5 million for the Democratic National Committee. A portion of the funds will support New Jersey’s governor’s race efforts.
Obama also highlighted the need for Democrats to focus on tangible results rather than ideological debates, pointing specifically to issues like housing affordability and zoning laws.
“If you want to deliver for people and make their lives better, you got to figure out how to do it,” he said.
During the fundraiser, Obama reflected on the current political climate under President Donald Trump, noting he wasn’t surprised by Trump’s actions and warning that institutions need to push back against intimidation efforts.
“What’s being asked of us is make some effort to stand up for the things that you think are right. And be willing to be a little bit uncomfortable in defense of your values,” Obama said.
The event underscored Obama’s ongoing influence within the Democratic Party, as leaders and supporters look for direction heading into the next election cycle.
