Trump Faces Backlash from MAGA Media Over Epstein Conspiracy Theories
The same conspiracy-driven culture that helped propel Donald Trump into political power is now creating friction within his own base.
Over the weekend, Trump posted on Truth Social saying people should stop focusing on Jeffrey Epstein, claiming “nobody cares about” the late convicted sex offender. The reaction from right-wing media figures was immediate and intense, with many rejecting Trump’s dismissal and demanding full disclosure about Epstein’s connections to powerful figures.
“Conspiracy theories keep people watching, sharing, and playing along,” CNN analyst Brian Stelter wrote in his review of the situation. MAGA media figures like Alex Jones, Mike Cernovich, and Matt Walsh have accused Trump’s administration of trying to bury the truth.
This marks a dramatic turn, considering that conspiracy theories — including Trump’s early “birther” claims and QAnon’s rise — once fueled his popularity. Now, Trump finds himself on the defensive as some of his own supporters demand Epstein-related answers.
Mike Davis, a former Trump legal adviser, tried to tamp down speculation, stating on X that no Epstein “client list” or incriminating evidence exists. However, his comments have only intensified online debate.
According to researchers, conspiracy theories like QAnon and Epstein-related speculations tend to be self-sealing. Even official denials from figures like FBI Director Kash Patel haven’t quelled the public’s appetite for answers.
The tension underscores a broader dynamic in right-wing media: a reliance on controversy and suspicion to fuel engagement. As Stelter notes, “Some people have been so hooked on the speculation that they don’t want answers at all.”
