Bay Area Trash Piles Up as Republic Services Workers Join Statewide Strike

Trash is piling up across the Bay Area as Republic Services garbage collectors have stopped working in solidarity with striking union members elsewhere in California.

Workers walked off the job last Tuesday, standing in support of their fellow union members engaged in ongoing labor disputes. The strike action has left many Bay Area residents without regular trash collection services.

While residents say they understand and respect the workers’ decision, they also acknowledge the growing inconvenience—especially with summer heat intensifying the issue. Uncollected trash is beginning to smell, prompting concerns about hygiene and neighborhood cleanliness.

“It’s starting to get a little stinky out here,” one resident shared, noting that while they support the workers, the timing is tough with temperatures rising.

Republic Services has brought in replacement workers from outside the area in an effort to keep essential trash collection services running. However, coverage remains spotty, with many neighborhoods reporting missed pickups.

The company has not provided a timeline for when full service might resume. Union representatives say the strike is part of a broader effort to secure better pay and working conditions across California.
