Democrats Push to Release Full Epstein Files, Turning It Into 2026 Campaign Issue

Democrats are making the Jeffrey Epstein case a central talking point ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, pushing for full public release of files tied to the convicted financier. Party leaders say transparency is long overdue and are framing the issue as both a moral and political one, connecting Donald Trump’s past ties to Epstein to Republican obstruction.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called for “the whole truth” about Epstein, accusing Trump and his allies of shielding damaging information. California Rep. Ro Khanna introduced an amendment demanding Attorney General Pam Bondi publish all Epstein-related documents within 30 days on a public website. While the House Rules Committee blocked that effort, Democrats are vowing to keep pushing.

Texas Rep. Marc Veasey filed a separate resolution, pointing out no Republicans have cosponsored it. In the Senate, Maryland’s Chris Van Hollen won bipartisan committee support for an amendment requiring the preservation of Epstein records.

Republicans are divided. Speaker Mike Johnson said he supports making more files public, while Trump deflected the decision to Bondi, saying she should release whatever she finds credible. Conservative commentators like Jason Rantz argue Democrats are pushing the issue in bad faith, aiming to divide Trump supporters rather than seek real answers.

A recent CNN poll found 50% of Americans are dissatisfied with how much information about Epstein’s case has been made public. Dissatisfaction is highest among Democrats (56%) and independents (52%), compared to 40% of Republicans.

On the campaign trail, Democrats like Sen. Jon Ossoff in Georgia are tying Trump’s Epstein ties to broader themes of corruption and lack of accountability. “He promised to release the Epstein files,” Ossoff said at a recent rally. “Did anyone really think the sexual predator president who used to party with Jeffrey Epstein was gonna release the Epstein files?”

House Majority PAC announced Tuesday it will target vulnerable Republicans over the Epstein files, connecting the issue to Trump-era tax cuts and pardons as examples of a party protecting “the elite, powerful and well-connected.”

Even possible 2028 presidential hopefuls are weighing in. Sen. Ruben Gallego of Arizona sent an email blast with the subject line “Release the Epstein List,” while California Gov. Gavin Newsom urged Trump to “show us what you got.”

Georgia Rep. Hank Johnson added a musical touch, posting a video of himself singing: “You’ve been telling us you’d release the files but where are they?”

Democrats say the issue is about transparency, while Republicans argue it’s a distraction. Either way, expect the Epstein files to stay in the headlines as both parties sharpen their messages ahead of 2026.
