Farmworkers Plan Nationwide Strike Over Immigration Policies

Farmworkers across California and the nation are preparing to strike this week in what organizers describe as a direct response to federal immigration policies and enforcement actions.

Dozens of farmworkers, community members, and human rights advocates gathered at La Placita Olvera in Los Angeles to address rising fear and anxiety within farmworker communities. The event, called Strike for Dignity, is being led by farmworker advocates including Flor Martinez Zaragoza.

“We are told that a lot of our workers in this country are replaceable after generations of loyalty and sacrifice,” Martinez Zaragoza said. “I’m here today in solidarity with farm workers across the nation who are calling for what should never have to be demanded—dignity, protection, and a pathway to citizenship.”

The Strike for Dignity is scheduled to take place from July 16 through July 18. Organizers say the goal is to make their voices heard and boycott large companies that have publicly supported the Trump administration’s immigration policies.

According to advocates, the strike aims to highlight not only the essential role farmworkers play in putting food on tables across America but also the uncertainty and vulnerability many face due to immigration enforcement.

So far, other local organizations have declined to comment on the planned strike or the press conference that announced it.
