Judge Orders Review of Menendez Brothers Murder Convictions Amid New Abuse Claims

A Los Angeles judge has ordered prosecutors to explain why the murder convictions of Lyle and Eric Menendez should not be reviewed. The decision comes after the brothers filed a petition in 2023, citing new evidence alleging sexual abuse by their father, which they argue was a factor in the 1989 killings of their parents.

Lyle and Eric Menendez were convicted of murdering their parents, José and Kitty Menendez, in Beverly Hills more than three decades ago. Both brothers were originally sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Earlier this year, however, a court resentenced them to 50 years to life in prison, granting the possibility of parole—a significant change in their legal status. Their parole hearings are now scheduled for August.

In their petition for a review of the convictions, the Menendez brothers presented new claims suggesting a history of sexual abuse by their father. The Los Angeles judge's latest ruling compels prosecutors to show cause for why the brothers should not be granted relief based on this newly presented evidence.

The outcome of this review could have serious implications for the future of the Menendez brothers’ case and for their chances at parole.
