Trump Calls His Bill ‘Most Popular Ever’ Despite Overwhelming Public Opposition
President Donald Trump declared Friday that his sweeping new domestic policy legislation is the “single most popular bill ever signed.” But fact checks and polling data show a starkly different picture—one that CNN calls an “up-is-down reversal of reality.”
According to multiple major polls conducted in June, a clear majority of Americans oppose the bill. A Fox News poll showed 59% opposed and 38% in favor. A Quinnipiac poll recorded 55% opposed, with only 29% supporting the legislation. A Pew Research Center survey found 49% opposed versus 29% in favor, with a large percentage unsure.
CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten noted that “you just never see numbers this poor” for major legislation. CNN reporting further revealed that the bill is potentially the most unpopular piece of legislation passed since at least 1990, based on data analyzed by Chris Warshaw, a political science professor at George Washington University.
Data journalist G. Elliott Morris added that, on average, only 31% of Americans support the bill, while 54% oppose it—giving the bill a historically low net rating of -23.
Despite these figures, Trump offered no public data to support his popularity claim.
Trump also made two additional false claims during his White House remarks:
Social Security Tax: Trump claimed his bill delivered “no tax on Social Security” for seniors. In reality, the bill provides a temporary $6,000 annual deduction for people 65 and older (2025–2028), not a full exemption. The White House says 88% of seniors would avoid taxation under the new policy, up from 64%, but millions would still pay taxes, especially those earning over $75,000 or under age 65.
Immigration Numbers: Trump again claimed that Biden “allowed in 21 million migrants.” In fact, the U.S. recorded fewer than 11 million encounters under Biden through December 2024. Even with estimated “gotaways,” the number is closer to 13 million, far short of the 21 million claim.
As CNN notes, Trump offered no evidence for any of the claims made Friday.
