Indio Police Secure Over 1,500 Pounds of Illegal Fireworks During 4th of July Weekend

It may have been Independence Day, but that doesn’t mean you were free to fire off any fireworks you wanted. The Indio Police Department recovered 1,500 pounds of illegal pyrotechnics over the 4th of July enforcement period, officials announced today.

In a press release given out on Wednesday, Indio Police said they fielded 165 fireworks-related calls for service during the two-day enforcement period, with the vast majority occurring on July 4th. Officers made nine fireworks-related arrests on July 4th, along with three DUI arrests and two firearms-related arrests. Drone surveillance captured six subjects violating fireworks ordinances.

"These efforts significantly reduced the risk to both residents and property," police stated, crediting the pre-emptive seizures with helping minimize incidents during the actual holiday.

The department reported a "noticeable decline in illegal fireworks activity compared to last year," attributing the improvement to increased social media outreach about penalties and enhanced community cooperation.

Indio Police praised residents who complied with city ordinances and reported violations, calling the community response "a testament to the trust and partnership between the Indio Police Department and the people we serve."

The enforcement action comes as many California cities continue to grapple with illegal fireworks use during Independence Day celebrations, which pose fire risks and public safety concerns.
