Coachella Valley High School to Receive $70,000 Grant for Critical AC Upgrades
Coachella Valley High School is receiving a significant boost thanks to a $70,000 grant from the Imperial Irrigation District (IID), as part of its GEMS (Grants for Energy Modernization in Schools) program. The high school, which has been a cornerstone of the community for over a century, faces an ongoing struggle with its aging infrastructure—particularly its air conditioning units.
“I love this school, but when the AC shuts off, it’s really hard to concentrate,” said a student who has attended Coachella Valley High School for the past two years. “It gets hot, and you just can’t focus.”
The issue stems from three major AC units, each more than 20 years old. According to project managers with the Coachella Valley Unified School District, the grant was a “no-brainer” for the school most in need.
“These units are old, and the parts are hard to find,” said the project manager. “Freon types used in them are becoming obsolete, and repairs are getting more difficult and expensive. With this grant, we can provide a more consistent and optimal learning environment for our students.”
Parents have also voiced their concerns, saying their children often come home complaining about how the temperature inside classrooms affects their ability to learn.
“It’s not just about comfort—it’s about their education,” said one parent. “If they’re too hot to focus, how can they succeed?”
While there's no official timeline yet for when the new AC units will be installed, school officials say they are ready to move forward as soon as plans are finalized and approved by IID. This investment marks a crucial step forward in updating Coachella Valley High School’s facilities and ensuring that students have the resources they need to succeed in a comfortable and modern learning environment.
