Smurfs Reboot, I Know What You Did Sequel, and Eddington Hit Theaters — Manny the Movie Guy Reviews
In entertainment news, Manny the Movie Guy is sharing his take on three new films aiming to make waves at the box office this weekend.
First up, the Smurfs film series gets another reboot. Featuring Rihanna as Smurfette, the story follows the Smurfs as they enter the real world to rescue Papa Smurf—voiced by John Goodman—who’s been captured by Gargamel and his brother Razumel. Directed by Chris Miller, known for Shrek the Third and Puss in Boots, Manny says the film feels dull despite its bright animation. “It will put little kids to sleep,” he says, rating it two out of four kisses and suggesting waiting for it on streaming.
Next is I Know What You Did Last Summer, the fourth installment in the franchise. This direct sequel to 1998’s I Still Know What You Did Last Summer brings back Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt. According to Manny, it’s “predictable and forgettable,” except for an impressive mid-credits scene. His rating: two “I really don’t want to know” kisses.
Finally, Manny highlights Eddington, an original neo-western set in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. It stars Joaquin Phoenix as a sheriff and Pedro Pascal as a mayor caught in a battle of ideologies. Written and directed by Ari Aster, Manny notes the film’s timely message is slightly weighed down by an overstuffed plot. Still, he calls it his “Pick of the Week,” giving it three out of four kisses.
