5.2 Earthquake Rattles Southern California, Centered Near Julian
A 5.2 magnitude earthquake shook Southern California late Monday morning, with the epicenter located near the mountain town of Julian in northeast San Diego County. The quake struck around 10 a.m., startling residents and prompting swift responses in schools and businesses.
Footage from Julian captured the immediate aftermath, including damage inside a local liquor store where bottles were shattered and scattered across the floor. In one emotional video clip, an elementary school teacher can be seen taking cover under a desk with a student in her arms, while another child lay on the floor beside them.
“I heard it first, and then when I felt it, I was like, I have to get the baby,” one resident shared.
Seismologists say the earthquake is likely connected to the Elsinore Fault, a lesser-known but active fault line that branches from the massive San Andreas Fault system. The tremor was felt across parts of San Diego County and even into the Coachella Valley, though there are currently no reports of major injuries or structural collapses.
The quake serves as a strong reminder of California’s vulnerability to seismic activity. Officials recommend residents review emergency plans and ensure earthquake kits are up to date.
