Community Leaders Rally in Indio Demanding Immigration Reform, Better Treatment for Detained Families

Community leaders, local families, and faith-based organizations gathered outside the U.S. Border Patrol station in Indio today, raising their voices against what they described as the “inhumane treatment” of immigrant families held in detention.

Organized by Inland Congregations United for Change and the United Farm Workers Foundation, the protest spotlighted recent deportations and ongoing family separations within federal detention centers. Protesters called for greater transparency, compassionate immigration practices, and comprehensive reform.

“I still remember the day my father was deported. The trauma is something I carry to this day,” said Miguel Camargo, a Coachella Valley resident who shared his personal story with the crowd.

Alongside the protest, organizers launched a new bilingual helpline designed to provide vital support for undocumented families throughout the region. The hotline—staffed by trained volunteers, legal professionals, and community partners—offers free assistance daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in both English and Spanish.

“This is about dignity, respect, and support for our most vulnerable neighbors,” said Alex Gonzalez of Faith in Action.

The helpline, which can be reached at 1-888-295-4282, provides resources including Legal guidance on immigrant and farmworker rights, Food and housing assistance, Tenant protections, Mental health and wellness support, Educational programs and leadership development, and Local workshops and volunteer opportunities.

The initiative is supported by regional churches, immigration attorneys, and consulates, aiming to build a network of care for families often left without options.
