Riverside County Confirms Carfentanil Overdose Death as Drug Fatalities Rise Nationwide
Riverside County health officials have confirmed the region’s latest carfentanil-related death, highlighting a growing concern over the ultra-potent drug.
The victim, identified only as a man in his 40s, died from a carfentanil overdose in March. However, extended delays in toxicology testing meant the autopsy wasn’t completed until recently.
According to Riverside County public health officials, carfentanil is approximately 100 times stronger than fentanyl and 10,000 times more potent than morphine. While carfentanil deaths have historically been rare across the United States, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports a sharp increase: 29 deaths were recorded nationwide in 2023, rising to 238 deaths in 2024.
Health experts are urging the public to take preventive measures, including having naloxone or Narcan on hand. Both medications can reverse opioid overdoses if administered quickly.
Officials stress that awareness and preparedness can save lives, especially as carfentanil’s presence becomes more widespread.
