Controversial Migrant Detention Site Opens in Florida Everglades, Nicknamed 'Alligator Alcatraz'

A controversial new migrant detention center is opening in the heart of the Florida Everglades, drawing criticism from immigration advocates, environmental groups, and local Indigenous communities.

Nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz,” the facility is a temporary detention site located at a remote training airport and surrounded by swampland. According to Florida emergency management officials, the site will begin housing its first group of detainees on Thursday.

The camp, built by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis at the request of the federal government, includes repurposed FEMA trailers and tents with the capacity to hold thousands of migrants.

President Donald Trump has defended the location choice, saying the presence of alligators and snakes provides an "added level of security" against escape.

But that reasoning has ignited a firestorm of criticism. Immigrant rights activists are raising alarm over the conditions and remote setting. Environmentalists warn of the ecological damage to sensitive Everglades habitat, while tribal leaders say the project was approved without consulting Florida’s Indigenous communities.

As the site begins operation, pressure is mounting on federal and state officials to answer questions about safety, legality, and transparency.
