Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Beloved ‘Cosby Show’ Star, Dies at 54 in Drowning Accident
Malcolm-Jamal Warner, the actor known to millions as Theo Huxtable on "The Cosby Show," has died at the age of 54, according to a source close to the actor.
Warner died in a drowning accident while vacationing with family in Costa Rica. Authorities say the incident occurred Sunday afternoon at Playa Grande in Cocles, located on the Caribbean coast. According to Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Police, Warner was pulled into the ocean by a current while swimming. Bystanders attempted to help, but he was declared dead by the Red Cross on the scene.
Warner rose to fame as a teen on “The Cosby Show,” which aired from 1984 to 1992. He received an Emmy nomination in 1986 for his role and later reflected on how the series changed television by presenting a positive, middle-class Black family.
Off-screen, Warner was a passionate advocate for positive representation of Black Americans in media. In 2015, he expressed sadness that misconduct allegations against Bill Cosby had, in his words, “tarnished” the show’s legacy.
Warner also pursued a successful music career, earning a Grammy Award in 2015 for best traditional R&B performance and another nomination in 2023 for best spoken word poetry album. He launched the podcast Not All Hood in 2024 to highlight the diversity of experiences in the Black community.
Throughout his career, Warner held roles in series like “Malcolm & Eddie,” “The Resident,” “Grownish,” and “9-1-1.” He remained active in TV, music, and public conversations about culture and race until his passing.
Warner is survived by his family, including a young daughter, and leaves behind a legacy of impactful storytelling and advocacy for representation.
